”EG3010” Breaks Mechanical Structure and Engineers’ Limit

Kozo:What we definitely needed was a large jig borer which can achieve the pitch accuracy of ±1μm/3000mm. We did know it can be hardly achieved but only Makino Milling Machine (Makino) said YES to challenge.

 

Haruka:Please tell me what had you decide to develop with Makino.

 

Kozo: I say completely the newest idea which breaks our stereotype on mechanical structure.

What we required was to inspect works on the machine itself and ultra-high precision with large size capacity. Makino’s proposal to our request was NOT to move the table. It was such a revolutionary idea. The machinery with gantry structure was exactly a measuring instrument. There is no accuracy dispersion even with heavy works since the table is not moved and head weight is steady.

Then we got another issue with gantry structure. We had to have 2 ball screws on the head’s axis. Makino developed the dedicated one for us. As a result, we could get “Measuring Machining Center”.

 

Haruka: I remember it has 2 spindles.

 
Kozo:Yes. We requested not only 2 spindles but also ATC (Automatic Tool Changer).

It was surely challenging and full of pressure for Makino to achieve those matters but they were always positive and did it.

 

Takanori:All workers from Makino seemed to be about to cry.

 

Kozo:It took long time to finish acceptance inspection.

Let me say in passing that the president of Makino gave our adviser his thanks. Makino’s employees had made their technical limits by themselves. This challenge, however, has broken such employees’ stereotype, motivated them and grown their conation. The designer Makino chose for this machine was the person in charge of aerospace section and made “EG3020”. We are very grateful to them.

Haruka:How do you come up with new ideas of machine function? Is unhandiness made use of the next development?

 

Kozo:Of course the unhandiness helps but the most importance is to improve our technique and accuracy. So, considering our accuracy target, we turn what to need over and order the machines.

 

Haruka:Please tell me how operators think to use such great machines.

 

Chisato:In my case, it is unforgettable when I started using “DV-1”, a profile grinder developed with AMADA. This machine grinds while measuring the work with a CCD video camera, meaning I don’t need to have visual observation. So I was afraid of problems occurred by interaction. However, the more I got experiences, the more I could enjoy using it and come up with new ideas.

 

Kozo:You had stayed late and worked very hard during starting up the machine.

 

Chisato:Yes. Accuracy we pursue cannot be realized only by high precision machine. Processing method and its know-how are also essential factors. I believe no one can make the same accuracy as I do even with the same machine.

 

Kozo:That is exactly what we should be! The perfect performance can be come true when we have both precision machine and operator’s technique.

 

Shinobu:We also have to control the condition of the whetstone, grinding water and so on. The operator must consider all the factors.

 

Kozo:Reproducibility is what I regard the most. When I see it, I get sure that the technology is finally established. And then we appeal it to our customer. I think this Win-win relationship is the ideal of business. Business partnership must not have biased interest.

We have to perform more than the marvelous machines standardly can, not to return evil for good.
